Kenya Suspends Flights to and from Somalia

Alert: U.S. Embassy Mogadishu (May 12, 2021)

Location: Somalia

Event: Media report that Kenya’s Civil Aviation Authority has suspended non-military flights departing for and arriving from Somalia for three months, with limited exceptions for humanitarian deliveries and medical evacuation flights.  During this period, U.S. citizens in Somalia will not be able to use direct commercial flights to visit the U.S. Embassy in Kenya for consular services.  Please consider this before requesting appointments.

The Department of State has issued a Level 4 Travel Advisory for Somalia and advises U.S. citizens not to travel to Somalia due to COVID-19, crime, terrorism, civil unrest, health issues, kidnapping, and piracy.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Level 4 Travel Health Notice for Somalia due to COVID-19.

The U.S. government has extremely limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in Somalia due to the lack of a permanent consular presence in Somalia.
