I wish all Somalis a very happy Eid al-Fitr. Eid reminds us of the importance of sacrifice and gratitude, virtues that are revered by both Americans and Somalis everywhere. As family and friends gather on this holiday to exchange good wishes and share gifts, we must not forget the importance of helping those who are less fortunate.
In 1901, former United States President Theodore Roosevelt offered the following advice, which is applicable at Eid in 2017:
“Let us remember that, as much has been given us, much will be expected from us, and that true homage comes from the heart as well as from the lips, and shows itself in deeds.”
