GUNFIRE AND ARMED CLASHES IN MOGADISHU

Security Alert:  U.S. Embassy Mogadishu (February 19, 2021)

Location:  Mogadishu, Somalia

Event:  In the early morning hours of February 19, 2021, sporadic gunfire broke out in Mogadishu.  Government and opposition politicians disputed responsibility, but according to unconfirmed reports as many as 20 people may have been killed or injured.  Stray gunfire and possibly one rocket propelled grenade impacted the Aden Adde International Airport (AAIA) compound.  AAIA has diverted incoming flights, and scheduled outbound flights are currently cancelled.  U.S. Embassy Mogadishu recommends that all U.S. citizens avoid downtown Mogadishu.

Actions to Take:

  • Avoid the area.
  • Monitor local media for updates.
  • Avoid crowds. 
  • Keep a low profile.       
  • Have travel documents up to date and easily accessible.
  • Have evacuation plans that do not rely on U.S. government assistance.
